what you can do (or let's say, what I typically do) is to add an entry into your local hosts file (e.g. C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts) like:
<IP> abapci abapci.dummy.nodomain hanadb hanadb.dummy.nodomain
with this entry, you should then be able to a) ping the maschine and b) use this as an alias.
And using this technique, you can e.g. connect a locally installed ABAP Development Tools (in Eclipse) and hopefully Visual Studio also likes this.
I'm searching for an official document on this, I only found the comment (How to set up and run the developer and trial editions provided as virtual appliance) by my colleague Christopher, but I cannot find an official Blog/Document.
